Opening in 1907 by Upper Egypt Hotels Co, founded in 1905 by Cairo hoteliers Charles Baehler and George Nungovich in collaboration with Thomas Cook & Son, Egypt, the Winter Palace was popular conceived as a winter retreat for European aristocrats and wealthy adventurers. Its grand halls and colonial design soon attracted prominent guests, including Howard Carter, the archaeologist who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb, and King Farouk of Egypt.

Surrounded by seven acres of lush gardens, the hotel is a serene retreat in the middle of the busy city of Luxor. Guests can indulge in exquisite dining at the 1886 Restaurant or enjoy a drink and nibbles at the Royal Bar.
Things to Know
- Seasonal Appeal: The hotel is best visited from October to April when temperatures are more comfortable. (We were there in November and it was warm enough to swim during the day, but cooled down in the evening.)
- Dress Code: Certain restaurants maintain a formal dress code for dinner.
- Guided Tours: The concierge can arrange private tours of nearby historical sites, including the Valley of the Kings.
- Butler Service: Don’t miss asking about the Butler Service provided at the hotel, it can make the difference. We relied on Ahmed when we were there. He thought of everything and anticipated our every need!
