My Favorite Thailand Beaches

There is never a time when I don’t long to be lounging on a beach in Thailand. It really is what it looks like in photos: endless sun, inviting water, and pure, white sand. Needless to say, the food and drink are fantastic too. There is a reason people keep returning over and over again for Thailand beach vacations.

When planning, there are so many to choose from, so I thought it might be helpful if I created my own Best Bits List of Thai Beaches for you as a guide. Some of these are quite touristy and some off-the beaten track. Remember touristy is not always a bad thing – think of Venice!

Five things to do in Koh Lanta, Thailand

Are you thinking about Christmas? I was last year this time. The Cypriot and I made a decision to go to Thailand for the holidays. We spent a week in Chiang Mai, about which I have written extensively, and almost a week in Koh Lanta.

Why Koh Lanta? One reason – The Layana Resort and Spa. Four years before, we had selected Koh Lanta and the Layana to be our resting place after nine hectic, non-stop days in Myanmar. It was exactly what we needed, four days in the sand and sun, only moving off our lounge chairs to get to our next meal.  It was the Layana that inspired my series of A Bit of Perfection posts so many years ago.

The General Manager, Stefan Heintze, […]

A Bit of Thailand: 24 Hours in Bangkok

Bangkok is a big, messy, crazy city that one either loves or hates. The tangle of streets and elevated train makes it seem futuristic in a 1970’s way – if that makes any sense at all. Think New York on speed.

24 HOURS IN BANGKOK
Now matter how it looks from the outside, the people are welcoming, the food great and the shopping spectacular. The Cypriot and I have been there a few times and always return for all those exact reasons.

Usually we are only 24 hours in Bangkok, before or after a journey elsewhere in Asia, so it seemed logical to write a post on exactly that subject. Actually it’s always a bit more than 24 hours. We give ourselves two dinners and one full day shopping. […]

A Bit of Perfection – The Rachamankha, Chiang Mai, Thailand

We knew where we were going – Chiang Mai, more specifically The Rachamankha. We had been there before; in fact that’s exactly why we were returning.

I travel constantly (not a complaint, by the way), so when the Cypriot and I were planning a trip over annual Christmas holiday, we both simultaneously said, “Chiang Mai!”

I know there’s a whole world out there to explore, but it was so good the first time, we couldn’t help being drawn back again for more.

The first time round, we found ourselves making an unscheduled pit stop in Thailand’s second biggest, when our flight was diverted from Luang Prebang. A close friend of mine was actually in Chiang Mai at the same time and I rang her to ask where she […]

Nimmanhaemin Road in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Jump into a tuk-tuk and all you have to do is say Nimman. The driver will transport you to one of the hippest streets in Chiang Mai. Officially Nimmanhaemin Road, everyone just calls this trendy shopping street by its shortened form: Nimman. Steps away from the bustling university, Nimmanhaemin Road can’t help but be the groovy, hipster center of the second city of Thailand. Chiang Mai may be mostly known for its temples and treks, but stay in town a few days and you can discover more than just Khao Soi and Monk Chat, but great Chiang Mai restaurants and shopping.
How to Get to Nimmanhaemin Road
Chiang Mai is in Northern Thailand and there are many ways of arriving in town. From Bangkok, it’s little more than an […]

A Bit of Paradise: The Layana Hotel, Koh Lanta, Thailand

“Welcome to Fantasy Island.”
I was sure I heard the General Manager of the Layana Resort say this as he slipped a garland of fragrant jasmine around my neck and handed me my first cocktail of the day.
