One of the grand dames on the Grand Canal, the St. Regis Venice has to be one of the best addresses in this city filled with luxury hotels. With its breathtaking view of Santa Maria della Salute and its incredible art collection, the St. Regis Venice is one not to miss if you are seeking that right cocktail of the historic and contemporary in a Venice hotel.
The hotel dates back to its original launch in 1895 as the Grand Hotel Britannia. More recently in the last century and this, it was known as the Hotel Europe and Regina. It has been the home to many famous prominent figures throughout its long history. Not only politicians and celebrities such as Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, and Princess Diana were drawn to stay in this famed hotel, but also artists, including Turner and Monet, also found a home here.
More recently in 2019, the hotel underwent a full-scale renovation and is now the St. Regis Venice. Upon entering the hotel, you are greeted by an eclectic collection of artwork and sculptures which pays homage to the hotel’s tradition of welcoming famed artists. The St. Regis Venice stills hosts artists from around the world to take residence and create unique pieces inspired by the hotel and its beloved locale.
The renovation was influenced by Venice’s own Carlo Scarpa (born June 2, 1906, Venice, Italy–died November 28, 1978). Hints of his use of light and water, polished marmorino, and emphasis on line can be found throughout the hotel, creating a marriage of modernity and elegance.
Getting to the St. Regis Venice
The St. Regis Venice Hotel is located in San Marco sestiere right on the Grand Canal. It is steps away from St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, and the Rialto Bridge. Guests can easily explore the city on foot or by boat, as the hotel is conveniently located near many water taxi and vaporetto stops.
The nearest airport to the St. Regis Venice is the Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), which is approximately 13 kilometers away. The train station is Venice Santa Lucia.
By Water Taxi
The most glamorous way to arrive at the St. Regis Venice by water taxi. Guests can take a water taxi from the airport, train station, or any other location in Venice. The hotel has its own private dock, which makes it easy for guests to arrive and depart by water taxi.
By Vaporetto (water bus)
Guests can also reach the St. Regis Venice by vaporetto water bus. The nearest bus stop is the Santa Maria del Giglio or the San Marco Vallaresso stop. From there, you can easily walk to the hotel.
Sleeping
The hotel features 130 guest rooms and 39 luxury suites, with some of the most spacious and luxurious accommodations in Venice. Guests can choose from a range of room types, including the Grand Canal View Suite, which provides breathtaking views of Venice’s Grand Canal!
The rooms are designed with a contemporary aesthetic and feature a soothing color palette, luxurious fabrics, and elegant furnishings. Each room is equipped with modern amenities such as high-speed internet, flat-screen TVs, and a well-stocked minibar with Acqua di Parma products – one of my favs!
Guests can choose from several types of luxury suites, including the Venetian Suite, the Astor Suite, and of course the Claude Monet suite, who was said to have who painted San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk while staying at the hotel.
Eating
The St. Regis Venice offers a range of exquisite dining and beverage options depending on what you are looking for.
Gio’s Restaurant & Terrace on the Grand Canal
One of the pleasures of staying at the St. Regis Venice is being able to dine outside with a view of the Venice at your side. It’s also to eat from a menu created by their Executive Chef Giuseppe Ricci.
Although Pugliese by birth, Chef Ricci has mastered Venetian cuisine. Still his Three Tomato Pasta belies his Southern roots and is one of my favorite dishes in Italy! It’s a menu filled with something for everyone – from red tuna sashimi, fresh seasonal salad and croaker bottarga to Sicilian style eggplant with capers, olives, pine nuts and tomatoes!
The Bars at the St Regis Venice
The St. Regis Venice has three bars, each with its own unique atmosphere. For those who might not know, I write A Lush Life Manual and there you will find all the info about the fabulous bars at the St Regis and all of the other hotels in Venice.
Lounging
Lounging is the operative word here. Venice is the ultimate resort. Most of your time is spent eating and drinking and, of course relaxing.
Their stunning Italianate Garden looking out over the water is the perfect place to exercise the art of relaxation. Indulge in one of the fabulous cocktails that Facundo and his team are on hand to create for you or order a plate of the Three Tomato Spaghetti off the menu and lounge for hours watching the boats go by.
If you have to go to the gym, the hotel has a fitness center, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
For those seeking some personal treatments, the hotel’s spa is the perfect place to unwind. The spa offers a range of treatments, including massages, facials, and body treatments.
If you wish to organize any sight-seeing, the hotel’s concierge service is on hand to arrange.

Best Bits to leave you with
It’s hard not to love Venice, but doubly hard when you’ve been treated so well and that you will when you stay at the St. Regis. Not only is the hotel fabulous, but the service is even better and it’s a hop, skip and a jump away from the most beautiful drawing room in the world, St. Mark’s Square. Need I say more?
